Motorcyclists urged to show solidarity

A significant number of ITD employees forsake more conventional – and costly – four-wheel modes of transportation for the wind-in-your-hair ride of a motorcycle to get to work. Those who ride motorcycles are invited to participate in the 15th annual Ride to Work Day, Wednesday.

The escalating cost of gas, which has surpassed $3 per gallon in some Idaho locations, is attracting more interest in motorcycles and scooters as a transportation option. But the allure of motorcycles isn’t confined to economics, according to organizers of the national event. They encourage the use of motorcycles on July 19 to demonstrate:

  • The number of motorcyclists to the general public and to politicians
  • That motorcyclists are from all occupations and all walks of life
  • That motorcyclists can reduce traffic and parking congestion in large cities
  • That motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation, and
  • That motorcycling is a social goal

Motorcycle commuters at Headquarters usually assemble in the parking lot between the main building and the East Annex, take a short mid-morning or noon-hour ride and pose next to their cycles for a ceremonial photograph. Motorcycle riders are invited to do the same at district offices.
